Pilot Car Services - FAQ

  • What is a pilot car service? A pilot car service is sometimes called a pilot truck service and also known as an escort vehicle service, is a specialized transportation service that helps guide oversize loads safely through transportation routes. These loads may include large construction equipment, oversize shipping containers, and other large items that require an escort for safe transport.
  • Why is a pilot car service necessary? Pilot car services are necessary to ensure the safety of both the oversize load and other vehicles on the road. Large loads can be challenging to maneuver and can obstruct the view of other drivers, which can increase the risk of accidents. A pilot car service can help guide the load through transportation routes and ensure that it stays within the designated lanes and follows all traffic laws.
  • What types of loads can a pilot car service assist with? Pilot car services can assist with a variety of oversize loads, including large construction equipment, oversize shipping containers, boats and yachts, industrial machinery and equipment, power transformers, prefabricated buildings, large sculptures, and bridge beams.
  • What services can a pilot car service provide? A pilot car service can provide a range of services to assist with the transportation of oversize loads, including route planning, permitting, coordination with local authorities, load preparation, and on-road support.
  • What is the coverage area of our pilot car service? We provide pilot car services throughout Western Canada and into the Northern United States.
  • What services do we provide?  We provide lead car services, Chase car services, Steerman services and Route planning services.
  • What does the Lead car do? A lead car is the vehicle that leads the oversize load and sets the pace for the transport. The lead car, drives ahead on the route to be able to warn the others of any potential hazards or restrictions on the route. The lead car is typically equipped with flashing lights and reflective materials to make it more visible to other drivers.
  • What is the rear car? A rear car is a vehicle that follows behind the oversize load and provides additional guidance and protection. The rear car often is seen blocking traffic from passing when the load needs the whole width of the road or to allow the load to change lanes in heavy traffic. The rear escort vehicle may be equipped with similar materials as the lead car to make it more visible.
  • What does a steerman do? A steerman is a professional who drives the rear "steerable" trailer around corners during the transportation of longer loads. The primary role of a pilot car steerman is to steer and protect the oversize load from cutting corners and ensures that the load stays on the road.
